Jets draft NT Ellis in 3rd round

Even if the NFL lockout doesn't prevent third-round pick Kenrick Ellis from playing for the Jets, the lockup might.

With 94th overall pick in the NFL Draft last night, the Jets took Ellis, a nose tackle from Hampton University who has more baggage than LaGuardia Airport. The massive 6-foot-4, 346-pounder is a space eater who will take up the middle of the Jets defensive line . . . if he's not in prison.

Ellis was arrested a year ago after a campus altercation and is facing a felony charge, according to the Newport News (Va.) Daily Press. He faces a July 12 jury trial and a possible 20 years in prison. (Post)

Jets sign 1st round pick

Hours before players report to Cortland, N.Y., for training camp, the Jets have taken care of each of their four draft picks.

First-round pick Kyle Wilson agreed to terms tonight on a five-year deal with a maximum value of $13 million and more than $7 million in guarantees, according to someone with direct knowledge of the terms.

That person requested anonymity because they are not authorized to speak for the team or Wilson. (Ledger)

Jets draft OL Vladimir Ducasse in 2nd round

Vladimir Ducasse should thank his college football coach, Kevin Morris, after being selected by the Jets last night in the second round of the NFL Draft.

Morris, speaking to the Jets about the Massachusetts offensive lineman, gave his player a ringing endorsement, telling them what a terrific person the Haitian-born Ducasse is and how much improvement he was still capable of making on the field.

"He's only started playing football as a junior in high school after coming from Haiti. So he's got a lot of football ahead of him," Morris told The Post last night. "With the great foundation he has already, he's going to continue to get better. I think that's what the Jets are looking at." Continue

Jets draft CB Wilson with the 29th pick

There's no truth to the rumor that Jets coach Rex Ryan's wife, Michelle, played cornerback on the women's flag football team at Southwestern Oklahoma State, where the two met as college sweethearts some 25 years ago.

Because let's face it, Ryan is so obsessed with cornerbacks he might as well be married to one.

That's why Ryan and the Jets made Boise State cornerback Kyle Wilson the team's newest offseason acquisition with the 29th pick in the NFL Draft at about 10:40 last night.

Ryan, in fact, sweated it out as the picks began flying off the board last night, fearing another team might swoop in and swipe Wilson from the Jets' grasp. Continue

Jets looking for some icing on the cake

Every year before the NFL Draft, Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum says the same thing.

“We’d like to go into this year’s draft with as much flexibility as possible,” Tannenbaum said recently for what seemed like the umpteenth consecutive year. “We think we’ve done that.”

Indeed, the Jets have, spending this offseason adding key players to areas of need — Antonio Cromartie at cornerback, Santonio Holmes at receiver, LaDainian Tomlinson at running back ,Brodney Pool at safety.

The Jets, in fact, after addressing their most pressing needs with such aggressiveness, enter this draft more flexible than a 14-year-old gymnast. Continue

Jets seeking DL help through draft

The Jets have spent the last three months trying to make up for 23 minutes.

They came that close to the Super Bowl, less than two quarters from stunning the Colts in the AFC championship game. Responding to the tease, the Jets have devoted this entire offseason — this wild offseason, with all the big-name acquisitions — to making themselves 23 minutes better than 2009.

Because they didn't have a cornerback who could cover any of Peyton Manning's receivers — except for Darelle Revis, of course — the Jets traded for Antonio Cromartie. Because they felt Thomas Jones was out of gas, they signed LaDainian Tomlinson to pair with Shonn Greene. Because Mark Sanchez needed another weapon, they traded for bad boy Santonio Holmes. Continue
