Jets and Dolphins love to chat

In the ongoing battle of the AFC East's bigmouths, the Jets and Dolphins seem to be fighting just as hard for the last word as they do on the field.

The latest jab came from Miami LB Joey Porter, who felt Rex Ryan was making light of the Dolphins' loss of CB Will Allen to a season-ending knee injury.

And the Jets' coach, of course, answered back.

"I don't feel sorry for them losing Will Allen," Ryan said after practice Friday. "Obviously I don't like it for any player to be hurt, but if they're looking for sympathy because Will Allen is out of the game, well, we've got Kris Jenkins and we've got Leon Washington out for the season, two guys that are Pro Bowl players. No disrespect to Will Allen, but I don't think he's going to make a Pro Bowl anytime soon. He's a decent player, but whatever." Continue

Jets' defensive pride on the line vs Dolphins

Rex Ryan stood before his team in yesterday morning's team meeting and began pushing motivational buttons Bill Parcells style.

Ryan read a quote from Dolphins running back Ronnie Brown that stated the Dolphins' 11 players on offense were tougher and more physical than the 11 players on the Jets' defense in Miami's 31-27 comeback victory over the Jets three weeks ago.

"I got the quote, and it's a great quote," Ryan said. "Obviously they must have thought they were the tougher team on that Monday night. We'll see who the tougher one is this week."

Ryan said he was so disgusted at seeing his defense spit up the lead three times in the fourth quarter in that loss that he wanted a rematch against the Dolphins "three seconds after the game ended." Continue

Jets lowering some tick prices for 2010

Jets season tickets for the inaugural season in the new stadium will be made available Sunday to the general public - some at slashed prices. The Jets lowered ticket prices 20% to 50% on Mezzanine Club seats, the team announced Wednesday.

The Mezzanine Club seats represent about 10% of the new stadium, which opens in 2010. So far, the Jets say they have sold about 70% of their non-premium seats to existing season-ticket holders.

PSL prices haven't been adjusted for any seats in the stadium. Continue

Can Jets stop wildcat?

About an hour after the Jets raided the Raiders, bathing in their Gatorade and eating their hot dogs (okay, one hot dog), Bart Scott dressed slowly in a near-empty locker room, his mind already focused on the Dolphins.

And revenge.

"We'll have no problem being motivated because we have a team that took something from us," the loquacious linebacker said Sunday.

A piece of the defense's dignity, he meant.

"We can't lose to these guys twice in one year and win the division," Scott continued. "This is a must-win. Plus, there's extra incentive because they embarrassed us. Even though the game was tight, that was the first time our defense got exploited this year. They exploited us and made us feel bad about ourselves."

WR Edwards charged with assault

Braylon Edwards' troubles have not simply disappeared since he was traded to the Jets.

The receiver was charged with assault yesterday for his alleged involvement in a fight outside a Cleveland bar in the early morning hours on Oct. 5.

Edwards, who was shipped to the Jets from the Browns just days after the incident, faces a misdemeanor after being accused of punching promoter -- and friend of LeBron James -- Edward Givens outside of a Cleveland club.

James called Edwards' actions "childish." Edwards caught one pass for 14 yards in the Jets' 38-0 win over the Raiders on Sunday in Oakland. He faces up to a $1,000 fine and 180 days in jail if convicted, although a jail stay would be unlikely. Edwards' attorney, Patrick D'Angelo, said his client will enter a plea of not guilty. Continue

Raiders cure for Jets losing ways

This was the type of game Rex Ryan imagined last spring, when he started talking about Bill Belichick's rings. It was a blueprint performance - make that a black-and-blueprint performance.

The Jets bludgeoned the lowly Raiders, in a 38-0 victory Sunday at the Oakland-Alameda Coliseum. Basically, the Jets left them feeling like Randy Hanson, the former Raiders assistant who claimed he was roughed up by coach Tom Cable.

When their work was done, the Jets had silenced the Black Hole with their first shutout since Dec. 14, 2003 - a 6-0 victory over the Steelers in a snowstorm. It was the most lopsided shutout win in franchise history. Continue

Jets in need of a win

The Jets need to resuscitate their swagger.

And what better place to do that than in the Black Hole, where the 3-3 Jets, losers of their last three, play the 2-4 Raiders today at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum?

“We’re in need of a win . . . bad,” coach Rex Ryan said.

Since the Jets’ bold, aggressive 3-0 start during which their defense harassed some of the NFL’s best quarterbacks into a rattled state of confusion and intimidation, all has been quiet on the win front for them, and that has decidedly quieted down the Jets’ bravado.

“I don’t think we’ve talked enough these last couple of weeks,” safety Kerry Rhodes said. “We’ve kind of gone away from that a little bit. I don’t know if we’ve been our same aggressive selves. Maybe we need to get back to it a little more.” Continue

Cotchery out

The Jets had hoped to get Jerricho Cotchery back from his hamstring injury in time to play tomorrow in Oakland, but the starting wide receiver will miss his second straight week. Considering the passing game fell apart last week -- with Gang Green throwing six interceptions -- that cannot be good news.

"Jerricho's not going to be able to play this week," coach Rex Ryan said yesterday. "I was hoping Jerricho [would] be able to do it, but to make that trip all the way out there, we feel it's best for him to stay back and rehab. . . . He's not going to play. Continue

Ryan focusing on penalties

In an attempt to crack down on penalties, Rex Ryan is pulling a page from the Eric Mangini book on discipline.

If a player commits a penalty in practice, he gets pulled out of the team drill and is required to run a sprint (offensive players) or perform up-downs (defensive players).

The Jets have committed 44 penalties, fourth-most in the league. RT Damien Woody called it a "startling" number, and Ryan is fed up.

"We're doing everything we can to make sure the focus is there," Ryan said. Continue

Is Ryans' style hurting Jets?

Rex Ryan's mouth keeps running, a family tradition, but here's his real dilemma: He has a rookie quarterback who doesn't appear confident or capable enough right now to back up his coach's words.

This is a tricky situation for Ryan, whose bravado has made him look foolish as the Same Old Jets have stormed the front gates, canceling out the 3-0 start with a three-game losing streak, the last loss courtesy of Mark Sanchez's five-interception meltdown against the Bills. Continue
